A one-day workshop in camera trapping at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre

Spend a Saturday understanding and gaining practical experience in using camera traps for wildlife on this one-day Wild Intrigue workshop. We have chosen the wonderful new Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre in Northumberland as our workshop base, enabling us to utilise the reserve’s wildlife to showcase the many options available in camera trapping for different species, in addition to classroom based teaching within the centre.

Camera trapping is an important part of Wild Intrigue Expeditions, and we use it as a successful method of identifying and monitoring wildlife on all our sites. Through the exploration of PIR camera trapping techniques, we also use camera trapping as method of gaining attractive photographs of largely nocturnal and elusive animals, such as Badgers.

Saturday 28th July 2018

10.30am – 4.30pm

18 and over: £50

Under 18’s: £40 (must be accompanied by one adult, who can attend for free!)

The workshop will include:

  • The evolution of camera trapping: exploring historic, current and potential uses as a method of conserving wildlife and as an art form.
  • Current camera trap technology: an overview of the technology currently available to you, including the pros and cons of each.
  • Setting camera traps: a chance for you to gain a thorough understanding and ‘hands on’ experience in setting camera traps for different species and environments.
  • Ready for your close up?: we will introduce you to the methods and uses of using close focus lenses in camera trapping. This includes the benefits and restrictions of using small mammal camera trap boxes as opposed to live trapping small mammals.
  • Reserve installation experience: a walk around the Hauxley Nature Reserve to identify the various locations in which camera traps could be installed; includes identifying tracks and signs to improve success. You will have access to Bushnell NatureView HD Live View camera traps as well as others to compare the usefulness of live view adaptors when installing camera traps.

This workshop is suitable for those with an interest in camera trapping aged 14 and above, however under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

Attendees aged below 18 are required to pay the amount stated above, however one accompanying adult may attend for free!

Based at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre

We will be taking full advantage of hosting this workshop at this brilliant Northumberland Wildlife Trust nature reserve, and will explore the site during the reserve installation section of the day. Whilst our main priority will be identifying, tracks, signs and suitable sites to assist in camera trap installation, we will spend time discovering the diverse wildlife of the reserve, and will share our expertise in identifying the wildlife we encounter.

Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre, Low Hauxley, Northumberland, NE65 0JR

As this workshop will include a walk around the reserve, we recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes as well as bringing a light raincoat - just in case! Refreshments and biscuits will be provided, however you will need to bring your own lunch, which you can enjoy either in the classroom or in the wilds of the reserve. Alternatively there is a cafe on site which serves delicious cakes, snacks and drinks.
